内容简介:

The Battle of Normandy was the greatest offensive campaign the

world had ever seen. Millions of soldiers struggling for the

control of Europe were thrust onto the front lines of a massive war

unlike any experienced in history. But this greatest of clashes

would prove to be the crucible in which the outcome of World War II

would be decided.

It began on D-Day. June 6, 1944-the day that the Allied Forces

launched Operation Overlord: the great crusade to free Europe from

the iron grip of Nazi Germany. But only when the troops were ashore

did the real battle begin.

With Nazi defenders marshaling to stop the invaders, Hitler and

his generals schemed to counterattack. Tightly constricted hedgerow

country and bitter German resistance held the Allied advance to a

crawl. Suddenly the Allies broke through and trapped the Nazi

armies. Yet within weeks of this stunning disaster, the Germans

smashed the most dangerous Allied offensive yet.

How was this possible? In Normandy Crucible, noted author John

Prados offers a penetrating account that reframes the Normandy

breakout to answer that question. For the first time he melds

intelligence into the combat narrative. Shifting between battle

action and command decisions on both sides, Normandy Crucible shows

in fascinating detail how this campaign molded the climactic battle

for Europe.

“Unquestionably emerges as the most valuable book on Jonestown

to date . . . Every piece of the puzzle is here.”

  —David Evanier, National Review

“An extraordinary inquiry into the individual pathology of Jim

Jones . . . To assemble this portrait obviously required staggering

research. The writing is sensitive and lucid. The result is a

document which will illumine a dark corner of our era.”

  —Daniel Schorr

书籍介绍

The “seminal book on the story of Jonestown” (Associated Press) is restored to print for the thirtieth anniversary of the Jonestown massacre, with a new preface by the author .

After many years, one of the most widely sought out-of- print books is newly available: Raven reveals the complete, shocking story of Jonestown, providing the definitive account of the worst cult tragedy in American history.

Tim Reiterman’s PEN Award–winning work explores the ideals-gone-wrong, the intrigue, and grim realities behind the Peoples Temple and its implosion in the jungle of South America. Raven clarifies historical misperceptions regarding the character and motives of Jim Jones; the reasons why people followed him; and the important truth that many of those who perished at Jonestown were victims of mass murder rather than suicide.

Here is the unparalleled record of a catastrophe the world still struggles to comprehend.
