Some philosophers claim virtuous activity (e.g., cultivating self-control, courage, generosity) and self-actualization (being the best you can be) are what make life worth living. But how does meaningful activities affect other 1, like happiness and mood
In a study conducted 2 Hooker and his co-workers, a total of 160 people (123 women) were selected as the research objects, who were randomly 3 to a self-monitoring or control group and 4 daily surveys for 28 days. Those in the self-monitoring group answered questions 5 physical activity, positive mood, and meaning salience (i.e., the frequency of thinking about purpose and meaning), while those in the control group did not answer these questions about their feeling or meaning salience. During eight random days, everyone was also asked to recall the previous day’s 6. A key measure was the Meaningful Activities Checklist (rating the meaningfulness of 46 common activities, like eating, sleeping, and working), which was finished at the beginning of the study and during the 24-hour activity recall. The results showed 7 in meaningful activities was associated with greater meaning salience, positive mood, life satisfaction, purpose in life, and vitality.
8, to promote well-being, it might be helpful to 9 people to explore and participate in meaningful activities and 10 them into their daily lives. In other words, if spending time with loved ones, helping others, or taking a 11 on a subject of interest are important to you, then 12 the time to do them. Or do them more often. It may also be 13 to try to discover meaning in 14 activities—even if these activities appear meaningless at first. 15, consider the act of making dinner. From one perspective, it is a 16 and tedious housework. But from another perspective, it is a meaningful and valuable way of caring for loved ones or oneself.
Similarly, daily activities could be 17 as helpful in cultivating a variety of virtues: self-control, courage, generosity, self-confidence, friendliness, gratitude, patience, self-respect, humility, honesty, open-mindedness, 18, persistence, or compassion. With practice and a conscious attempt to 19 commonly performed activities to valued virtues, one’s daily activities can become enriched with meaning and significance. This way, even when we cannot take part in meaningful activities of our choosing, we still 20

Text 1
Even in normal times, attending housing court in America is an upsetting encounter with the justice system, as few renters can afford lawyers to challenge the removal orders sought by their landlord. Even more discouraging would be the sight of a judge pronouncing a family’s removal by video conference during an epidemic.
Fortunately, many cities and states issued suspensions when it became clear that the epidemic would result in a lot of missed rent payments. The CARES Act, the enormous stimulus package passed by Congress, included a removal suspension for federally subsidised housing. Though it covered fewer than half of renters in the country, advocates cheered the measure before it expired. Congress has been unable to come up with a second stimulus bill, even though Democrats and Republicans agree that one is necessary, which prompted worries of a wave of removal filings. In some cities, removals quickly rose again after coming to a halt. The consequences looked bleak.
A solution has come from the Centres for Disease Control (CDC), which argued that removals accelerate the spread of the virus, and issued a sweeping suspension that applies to most renters nationwide. The public-health reason for the decision is straightforward. A team of epidemiologists has published a model estimating that even a low removal rate (0.25% of households per month) would increase cases by 1.5% by the end of the year. But a high removal rate (2% of households per month) would increase cases by 13%.
Although the CDC order is doubtless well-intended, whether it will be judged legal is still uncertain. Without any immediate compensation for lost rental payments, landlords will be left with mounting bills. Arguably, this stands awkwardly with the constitutional guarantee that “private property shall not be taken for public use, without just compensation”. Indeed, there is already a lawsuit against the city and state removal suspensions introduced in Seattle on this ground.
Renter advocates and landlord-lobby associations agree on one thing—they would rather the federal government footed the bill. The stimulus proposal created by Democrats in Congress would set aside $100bn to help pay for six months of back-rent and late fees, but its actual passage looks improbable. Others would like to go further. Housing Justice for All, a New York group, would like all housing costs incurred during the epidemic to be “automatically forgiven and never owed”.
Nothing spurs policy innovation quite like a crisis. During the second world war America imposed extraordinary rent controls covering more than 80% of the national rental stock. Today, some would like to replace national rent control with national rent cancellation.
21. According to Paragraph 2, the removal suspension in the CARES Act .
[A] expanded the coverage of housing subsidies
[B] was heartily welcomed by quite a few people
[C] complemented the previous stimulus bill
[D] was backed by both political parties
22. It can be learned from Paragraph 3 that a high removal rate .
[A] follows the virus transmission
[B] gains support from epidemiologists
[C] puts pressure on transportation
[D] leaves public health in danger
23. The CDC order may be judged illegal because .
[A] it fails to compensate for renters’ losses
[B] it conflicts with a constitutional provision
[C] it ignores the interests of landlords
[D] it brings a growing number of lawsuits
24. The agreement made by tenants and landlords .
[A] called for the government to pay for the rental
[B] pushed Congress to pass another stimulus bill
[C] received favor from Housing Justice for All
[D] canceled all housing costs during the crisis
25. Rent controls during World War Ⅱ are mentioned to indicate that .
[A] military operations affect rental stock of a country
[B] the housing policy should benefit most Americans
