内容简介:
In Statecraft, Margaret Thatcher, a unique world figure, discusses global military, political, and economic challenges of the twenty0first century. The former British Prime Minister brings her unrivaled political experience to comment on the threats that democracy faces at the dawn of the new millennium and the role Western powers should play in the world's hotspots, especially in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.
Reflecting on the lessons of the Cold War, she outlines the foundation of U.S. dominance and its mission as the only global superpower. Thatcher offers wise observations about the dangers posed by Balkan instability, rogue states, Islamic extremism, and international terrorism -- and suggests strategies to counter them. She also examines current trends in Russia, China, India, the Far East, Europe and Great Britain, and offers guidance for the future. Noting how every contemporary problem evokes demands for a global solution, Thatcher also warns of over-reliance on international institutions at the expense of nation states.
Statecraft is an incisive treatise on power in the age of globalism, written by a legendary world statesperson with a matchless combination of principles, experience and shrewdness.

原文赏析:
Yet I am not one of those who believe that statecraftshould concern power without principle. For a start, pure Realpoli-tik-that is,foreign policy based on calculations of power andthe national interestt-is a concept which blurs at the edges themore closely it is examined.Bismarck, its most famous prac-titioner,once remarked over dinner that conducting policy withprinciples would be like walking along a narrow forest path whilecarrying a long pole between one's teeth. But even the Iron Chan-cellor had principles of a kind:after all,he accepted without demurthat his loyalty was to his royal(and later imperial)master ratherthan to the German people -a large section of whom he leftexcluded from the Reich. He upheld the system and the valuesof the Prussian state, not those of a liberal democratic...
I wanted to remind the politicians present-the ordinary Czechsneeded no reminding,as the reception they gave me had demonstrated-that the Cold War was a war for freedom, truth and justice. And we anti-communists won it.
Over [the citizens]stands an immense, protective power which is alone responsible for securing their enjoyment and watching overtheir fate. That power is absolute, thoughtful of detail, orderly, provident, and gentle. It would resemble parental authority if,father like,it tried to prepare its charges for a man's life, but onthe contrary,it only tries to keep them in perpetual childhood...Why should it not entirely relieve them from the trouble of thinkingand all the cares of living? Thus it daily makes the exercise of freechoices less useful and rarer, restricts the activity of free will withina narrower compass, and little by little robs each citizen of theproper use of his own faculties.Equality has prepared men for allthis, predisposing them to endure it and often even regard it asbeneficial...

Book Description
I wanted to write one more book -- and I wanted it to be about the future.
Few leaders have stood on the brink of change to the extent of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher. Now this commanding world figure draws upon her unrivaled political experience to comment on the threats that democracy faces at the dawn of the new millennium and on the role that Western powers should play in the world's hot spots, especially in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.
Reflecting on the lessons of the Cold War, Thatcher outlines the foundation of U.S. dominance and its responsibilities as the only global superpower. She offers prescient observations about the dangers posed by Balkan instability, rogue states, Islamic extremism, and international terrorism -- and suggests strategies to counter them. In addition, she examines current trends in Russia, China, India, the Far East, Europe, and, particularly, Great Britain. Noting how every contemporary problem evokes demands for a global solution, Thatcher also warns of overreliance on international institutions at the expense of nation-states.
Statecraft is an incisive treatise on power in the age of globalism, written by a legendary world statesman with a matchless combination of principles, experience, and shrewdness.
